HD Live/5D Ultrasound vs. 3D/4D Ultrasound: What's the Difference?

Key Takeaways
3D ultrasound produces a still, three-dimensional image of your baby's face and features, while 4D ultrasound adds real-time movement.
HD Live and 5D ultrasound apply advanced lighting and rendering technology on top of 4D to produce highly detailed, photorealistic prenatal images with a warm, flesh-toned finish.
Each imaging type serves a purpose. The right choice depends on your stage of pregnancy and what kind of experience you're looking for.
The ideal window for 3D/4D or HD Live / 5D imaging is between 27 and 32 weeks, when the baby has enough fat to show defined facial features and still has room to move.
Sweet Pea 3D/4D Ultrasound Nola offers 2D, 3D, 4D, and HD Live / 5D ultrasound sessions for expectant families across the greater New Orleans area.
If you've been researching elective ultrasounds, you've probably come across a mix of terms — 2D, 3D, 4D, HD Live, 5D — and wondered what any of it actually means. The terminology can feel confusing, especially when different studios use it differently.
Here's a clear breakdown of what each imaging type does, how they compare, and what to expect when you book. Whether you're trying to decide which package fits your pregnancy best or just want to understand what you'll be looking at on screen, this guide covers it all.
Understanding the Basics: 2D, 3D, and 4D Ultrasound
2D Ultrasound
This is the black-and-white image most people are familiar with from prenatal appointments. It uses sound waves to create cross-sectional images of the baby. You can see movement, position, and measurements in real time. It's the standard for clinical and diagnostic purposes, including measuring growth, checking the placenta, and confirming due dates. It's also the technology used for gender determination scans and peace of mind scans.
3D Ultrasound
3D ultrasound stitches together thousands of 2D image slices to create a single three-dimensional still image. Instead of a cross-section, you see a surface-rendered view of the baby — a face, a profile, a tiny hand. The image is gold-orange in tone and static, but it gives you a much clearer, more recognizable look at your baby's features.
4D Ultrasound
4D is the movement of that same 3D image, captured as a continuous live video feed. The fourth dimension is time. You're watching your baby move in real time, yawning, stretching, or bringing a hand to their face, in that same gold-orange rendering. Most studios that offer "3D/4D" sessions give you both: still 3D captures alongside the live 4D viewing experience.
What Is HD Live and 5D Ultrasound?
5D Ultrasound
5D ultrasound is a still image, just like 3D, but with a key visual difference. Instead of the gold-orange tone of standard 3D, 5D applies a soft pink, flesh-toned filter over the image that smooths the rendering and gives the baby a more lifelike, natural appearance. The features look refined, and the overall image has a warmer, more photographic quality.
You may also hear it called "S View" or "realistic view," depending on the machine. Different manufacturers label it differently, but the result is the same: a still image that looks noticeably more detailed and true-to-life than standard 3D.
HD Live Ultrasound
HD Live is the movement version of that same flesh-toned rendering — essentially the 4D equivalent of 5D. Where 4D gives you live video in gold-orange, HD Live gives you that same real-time movement in the smoother, warmer pink flesh-tone finish. It's the highest level of detail available in elective prenatal imaging today.
At Sweet Pea, we offer HD Live/5D imaging as part of our Signature and Deluxe packages.
How Each Imaging Type Compares

Color/tone | Black and white | Gold-orange | Soft pink, flesh-toned |
Image finish | Diagnostic | Surface-rendered | Smoothed, photorealistic |
Movement | Real-time (diagnostic) | Live video (4D) | Live video (HD Live) |
Best for | Gender confirmation, peace of mind scans, diagnostics | Bonding, facial features, movement | Maximum image clarity, keepsake portraits |
When Is the Best Time to Book?
Timing is one of the most important factors in getting clear, detailed images, and it's something many families don't think about until after they've already booked.
The Sweet Spot: 27–32 Weeks
The ideal window for elective 3D/4D or HD Live / 5D imaging is 27 to 32 weeks. At Sweet Pea, we recommend 28–32 weeks for the clearest face images.
Here's why timing matters:
Before 27 weeks, the baby hasn't built up enough fat under the skin yet. Images can look less defined than the soft, full-featured face most parents are hoping to see.
After 32–34 weeks, the baby is bigger and has less room to move. They may be positioned in a way that makes a clear face view harder to get, and amniotic fluid starts to decrease, which affects image clarity.
Between 27 and 32 weeks, the baby typically has defined features, plenty of fluid for a clear picture, and is still active enough to capture good movement footage.
What If You're Earlier or Later?
Sessions at 24–26 weeks can still produce good results, especially for profile shots. Features may just be a little less filled out. Sessions at 32–35 weeks are also possible and can yield great images depending on the baby's position. Beyond 35 weeks, results become more variable.
If you have questions about timing based on your specific pregnancy, reach out before booking, and we're happy to help you find the best window.
What to Expect During Your Session
Before your appointment: Stay well-hydrated in the days leading up to your session. We recommend drinking a gallon of water every day for two weeks prior to your exam. Good hydration supports amniotic fluid levels and contributes to clearer images. Some parents have a light snack or juice beforehand to encourage the baby to move, though results vary.
During your session: You'll lie on a table while our sonographer applies warm gel and moves the transducer across your abdomen. Your baby appears live on a large screen, and your family is welcome to watch along. You can even FaceTime loved ones who can't make it in person. Session length depends on your package, anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes.
What you take home: Depending on your package, you'll leave with digital images, video clips, printed photos, or a combination. Your online gallery is accessible shortly after your visit.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between HD Live and 4D ultrasound?
Both show your baby moving in real time. The difference is in the image rendering. Standard 4D produces live video in a gold-orange tone with surface-level rendering. HD Live produces that same live video with a smoother, flesh-toned finish that gives the baby a more natural, photorealistic appearance. Same movement, noticeably different image quality.
What is the difference between 3D and 5D ultrasound?
Both are still images. The difference is in how they look. 3D renders in a gold-orange tone. 5D applies a soft pink, flesh-toned filter that smooths the image and gives the baby's features a warmer, more lifelike appearance. 5D images tend to look more refined and closer to a photograph than standard 3D.
Can you find out the baby's gender during an HD Live or 5D session?
Gender confirmation isn't the primary focus of an HD Live or 5D session and depends on the baby's position. At Sweet Pea, we offer a dedicated gender ultrasound package available as early as 17 weeks, as well as the SneakPeek® DNA gender blood test available as early as 10 weeks. If gender is your main goal, those are the better fit.
How early can I book a 3D/4D or HD Live/5D ultrasound?
We can attempt 3D/4D or HD Live/5D imaging starting around 24 weeks, but the clearest results come between 27 and 32 weeks. Before 24 weeks, the baby doesn't yet have enough subcutaneous fat to show soft, defined features. For the best images, we recommend waiting until at least 28 weeks.
Do I need a doctor's referral to book an elective ultrasound at Sweet Pea?
No referral is needed. You schedule directly with us. All clients do need to already be receiving prenatal care and have had a medical ultrasound to confirm due dates and screen for any concerns before their elective session. Elective sessions at Sweet Pea are separate from your medical prenatal care and are not a substitute for OB-ordered imaging.
